DIY Valentine’s Day Heart Garland
My girls look forward to Valentine’s Day every year. They think it’s so ‘fuscious’! Which is Emme’s made up word for fancy. One day she said, “I love it! It’s so fuscious!”
I said, “What is fuscious?”
She said, “It means fancy, oo lala.”
And I was like, “OH EM GEE… I love that.”
So it stuck. And every year they can’t wait for their fuscious holiday.
I low-key don’t like holiday day decorations. But the people have spoke (a.k.a. my family) and they want the decorations. So I said they had to be tasteful and I could likely make whatever was at the store. Their favorite shape is a heart (momma’s is a diamond 😁 💎). So here we are with this adorbs heart garland with my daughter’s own heart designs. *gasp* It’s too cute!
SUPPLIES NEEDED FOR DIY VALENTINE’S DAY HEART GARLAND:
-red felt
-purple felt
-pink felt
-cotton string
-sewing machine
-paper
-pencil
-poly-fil
-scissors
-heart template
-needle
HOW TO MAKE DIY VALENTINE’S DAY HEART GARLAND:
1. Draw a heart shape on a piece of paper. Cut it out. I had my daughter draw hearts and I used her drawings as a template. You could also print a heart shape from the internet.
2. Use your template to trace the heart on the felt. You will need two pieces for each heart. To make cutting each heart easier, I cut around each heart into smaller pieces. Or you can cut out little rectangles the size of your stencil and hold the stencil while you cut.
3. Now you are going to sew a set of hearts together! I used a straight stitch. Backstitch and sew around the heart leaving a little opening.
4. Make sure the needle is down. Lift up the presser foot and add poly-fil. Fill the heart as puffy as you want. You might need a popsicle stick or a straw or a chopstick to shove it in.
5. Put the presser foot back down, stitch to the end, and backstitch.
6. Once all the hearts are complete thread a needle with string. Push the needle through the back of a heart and out the same side. Continue until all the hearts are on the string. I had a blunt weaving needle so I had to dig into the felt a bit to get it to go through.
7. Tie ends with a loop and hang wherever!
Happy Valentine’s Day!
